Calculated X-Ray Backlighting Images of Mixed Imploded Targets

چکیده
Shell-core mixing, which can occur during the deceleration phase of a laser-driven implosion, is believed to be the major limitation on target performance. This mixing is brought about by a hydrodynamic instability during the deceleration phase, which is seeded by instability generated during the acceleration phase due to laser and target no nun if or mi tie^.^ The image of the x-ray emission from the shell (enhanced by high-Z doping) was used in recent experiments to diagnose this e f f e ~ t . ~ ~ e c a u s e of the limb effect, this emission appears in the image in the form of a ring; mixing causes this emission ring to move toward smaller radii. However, the difference in the image characteristics between mixed targets and unmixed targets, which compress to a smaller radius, is subtle: in the former case, the outward drop in intensity is slower. Thus, a smaller compression and mixing tend to cancel each other's effect on the position of the ring in the image.

182 LLE Review, Volume 75 Two-dimensional (2-D) monochromatic imaging of laser-imploded targets1–6 is useful for diagnosing target compression and stability. Here we present a simple method for such imaging, using an array of about 300 pinholes placed in front of a flat-crystal x-ray spectrometer. The main advantage of this method (in addition to its simplicity) is the ability to simultaneously...

In fast ignition scheme [1], dense plasma formation and additional heating with an ultra-short high-energy laser pulse are of great importance. In particular, implosion dynamics and energy transport process by fast particles must be investigated with x-ray spectroscopy and imaging in order to attain efficient fusion burn. We have measured the electron temperature and density profiles of laser-i...

Monochromatic and quasi-monochromatic x-ray backlighting is a proven diagnostic technique with many important applications in Inertial Confinement Fusion and related research work. The quasi-monochromatic x-ray source can also be used in the x-ray absorption spectroscopy. A quasi-monochromatic x-ray backlighting system in the spectral range of 7.9 – 9.4 Å (1.32 1.57 keV) range has been develope...
